Bridal Fashion ’09

It’s that time of year again when the wedding invitations start falling through the mailbox. The first thought that pops into your mind is ‘What the hell am I going to wear?’ Of course, everyone will look at the blushing bride and focus on her clothes, but you also want to look your best at the wedding. Gone are the days when it was a foregone conclusion that the ceremony would take place in a church or other place of worship, and it was simply a matter of wearing a fancy outfit and a suitable hat. The wedding attire you choose also depends on the type of venue for the wedding reception. This can be a semi-formal event in a fancy hotel or under a canopy in the grounds of a stately home, or perhaps a more relaxed event in a pub or even at the bride’s family home.

If possible, find out what other women are planning to wear that day and dress accordingly. Satins and silks with lots of frills and frills are very much in style in 2009, so there are plenty of options for suitable wedding wear for women in High Street shops. Keep your clothing choices simple but feminine, and select something you can wear to other occasions, such as parties or meals out, so you’re not left with an out-of-wear fashion item. A simple knee-length black silk or silk dress with ruffles on the white-trimmed bodice is a good choice and can be coordinated with a matching black-and-white clutch and black-and-white stilettos.

For cooler days or evening receptions, wear a black or white pashmina around your shoulders. A pashmina is a great and versatile addition to any wardrobe and can be worn all summer long with any outfit, casual or dressy. Another option is a V-neckline dress with a floral print and a white background, combined with strappy sandals. Pick one of the print colors and use it as an accessory color, for handbags, shoes, jewelry, and maybe a headpiece instead of a hat. Pair the dress with a cropped tailored jacket in crisp linen.

For a formal wedding, a black jacket can be worn over a knee-length sleeveless white dress with black patent leather heels and a matching bag, with a wide-brimmed black and white silk hat trimmed with lace. Littlewoods Direct’s Teatro Organza dress fits the bill perfectly and won’t cost an arm and a leg for less than £70. For a summer wedding, the perfect dress shape is a fitted, fitted bodice with a contrasting belt or sash, with a large floral print. This can be worn with a shrug or a black jacket for the ceremony. At the reception, remove your jacket to reveal a sleeveless ball gown that’s been embellished with lots of jingling bracelets.

Remember not to overshadow the bride. It’s her big day and she has to be prom queen. Avoid tight clothing, low necklines, or high hems. Be discreet in your clothes, but choose an outfit that is suitable for the solemn ceremony and the lively party after it.
