It is said that everything in the world has a purpose. I’m still finding out what that is for fleas and ticks. These pesky little critters aren’t life-threatening, but they do make life that much more challenging for the poor dog and the owner as well. We never want to spray our pets with chemicals as much as possible; So here are several natural flea repellants for dogs that you can try at home.

Natural flea and tick control for dogs can begin in their diets. That’s right, what they eat can help keep fleas at bay. Did you know that garlic repels more than just your date? A moderate amount, grated into your dog’s bowl, will make your pet taste unpleasant to the clueless flea. Boost your immunity with Omega-3 fatty acids and B-complex supplements, apple cider vinegar, and saffron oil. Consult with your veterinarian about the most suitable dose for your dog.

You can also use apple cider vinegar by diluting it in your dog’s bath water. The smell and taste of this keep fleas away. If your dog doesn’t necessarily like apple cider vinegar on his coat, you can also mix rosemary essences into his bath water. It has the same effect.

A citrus spray is also a natural flea repellant for dogs. Get the juice of four large lemons and mix it in half a quart of water. Spray on your dog’s fur, being careful not to spray on the face. Essential oils like lavender, cedarwood, lemongrass, tea tree, and geranium can be applied to the dog’s collar or rubbed behind the ears, around the tail, and on the joints. Keep in mind that cats are a different matter and don’t do well with essential oils.

There are more fleas residing on your furniture than on the actual animal; therefore, it is important that you disinfect your environment as much as you can. Vacuum carpets and upholstery well and sprinkle with salt or crushed rosemary leaves. Let them stay overnight and vacuum again the next day. Don’t forget to throw away the contents of the vacuum bag.

Carefully wash your dog’s bedding. Add a little eucalyptus or citronella oil when you rinse it and let it dry in the sun. When you see a tick, don’t swat at it; discharge can cause further infection. These pests also don’t drain, so when you find one, wrap it in a tissue and wash it; or douse it with isopropyl alcohol to kill it.

Warm and humid seasons generate more of these organisms. Be extra vigilant and bathe your pets frequently during the summer months. Run a fine-toothed flea comb through his coat regularly and check for fleas when weather permits. Remember, some of these fleas carry diseases like Lyme disease, heartworm, ehrlichiosis, and babesiosis, so your pet will appreciate the extra precaution.

The best natural remedy for flea and tick control in dogs is to simply make sure your pet is as healthy as possible. Keep the dog and its surroundings clean, feed it a nutritious diet and avoid stressful situations that can weaken the animal’s immune system.
