The nurse CEUS requirements for renewing a nursing license vary from state to state. In general, 10 hours of participation in a specific educational course is enough to fulfill the requirement. Nursing CE courses must be conducted by a qualified provider and must relate to nursing practice. Some states require specific courses while others don’t require any. The amount of contact hours required varies as well. Listed below are the CEU requirements for renewing a nursing license by state.
Continuing education units are a requirement in most states. These units help nurses improve their skills and reduce their risk of liability for the healthcare institutions. These units cover topics typically found in a nursing school curriculum. Generally, continuing education hours are worth one credit hour. There are many different Nurse CEUs courses that nurses can choose from. Some states have specific requirements for each category, such as identifying and reporting child abuse or infection control. Some states allow nurses to choose what they wish to complete with the remaining hours.
APRNs must also meet CE requirements. APRNs are required to complete eight hours of CE each renewal period. In Florida, the RN license renewal period is 24 months. In California, the requirement is 30 contact hours. However, this requirement is lower than in other states. The CE requirements for LPNs are a bit higher. They must complete at least two hours of CE every two years. Additionally, they must earn a certificate or other license that includes a continuing education program.

Despite the soaring cost of continuing education, nurse professionals should always remember that continuing their education is the best way to advance their careers and ensure their licenses stay valid. Taking advantage of CEU opportunities can be a fun way to expand your knowledge and expertise. In fact, you may be able to find a course at your nursing facility that will meet your CEU requirements. Alternatively, you may contact your state’s nursing board to see if they have any approved CEU sources.
In addition to continuing education requirements, LPNs should also meet specialty certifications. These must be from a national certifying organization. For example, an APRN must complete at least three hours of continuing education on HIV/AIDS every two years. ANCC approval is considered a gold standard. If a nursing professional does ANCC-approved continuing education, it counts toward the renewal of their license. However, they should also maintain a record of their CEs.
Some states do not recognize some types of CEUs as CEs. Among the exceptions are the Basic Life Support, Pediatric Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program. In California, this course may not qualify for continuing education credits. If a nurse holds two licenses, she must report the CE hours under both licenses. The same holds true for certification in other specialty areas. Further, there are many other courses that are not recognized as CEs for nurses.
