Why are some members of the BJJ community labeling Gene Simco a fraud? Why is there controversy around Gene Simco?

Gene Simco began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu around the time of the birth of MMA in the US At the time, very little instructional information existed on the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Simco, already a lifelong martial arts teacher and enthusiast, began diligently training in BJJ. Because he was so new to America and schools were few and far between, Simco traveled to seek top-notch instruction and kept notes of his training sessions with some of the best instructors in the world. He would then bring the information to his students to improve the martial arts program at his school.
Over the years, Simco began employing Brazilian black belts to teach school regularly, and along the way, he would earn belts from them as he deserved. Simco and his students saw having many different instructors as a way to get as much information as possible and create a diverse learning environment, but unfortunately, the sporting side of BJJ, which consisted of “teams” and aggressive competition, was not did. don’t see it the same way. Simco is a martial arts instructor who began training long before large-scale sports jiu-jitsu existed. His motives for training were self-defense, self-interest, and recreation. His only goal was to create better students and to do so, he would have to get all the information he could from as many places as possible.
This same philosophy later translated into his books and DVDs, where he compiled techniques and information from various instructors and years of experience training with them. Obviously, his tremendous success in the martial arts industry shows that people appreciate the amount of knowledge he has amassed and now offers in his products and services. However, there is a part of the BJJ community that has misrepresented what most feel is a good thing and tries to make it look like he is “buying belts” and spreads rumors about his relationships with certain instructors.
The fact is, Gene Simco trained with many of the world’s top instructors for the purpose of learning and earned his belt along the way. The idea that he would seek a quick promotion or buy a belt is proven false by two facts: Simco trained for ten years before earning his black belt, and when Gene Simco was promoted to Purple Belt in BJJ, he voluntarily removed his Black Belt in Jiu. traditional. -jitsu and never used it again. There are many people of questionable integrity who wear their karate or judo black belts while having a lower rank in BJJ, creating the illusion that they are a BJJ black belt. Gene Simco is not one of these people and he never has been. He has always been frank with his students and is only criticized by his competitors who have failed in the businesses in which he has been successful.

By feeding a very hungry BJJ community, Simco became very popular in a short period of time. The demand for his products exceeded his ability to supply them. Many years ago, Gene was forced to partner with companies that could finance and market his products. During that time, a few biographies were written about him that weren’t entirely false, but were promoted more than Gene would have liked. As soon as Simco raised enough capital to buy the rights to some of his products and websites, he corrected any exaggerated advertising or biographies. This is something he has always been upfront and honest about. Because of this, you won’t find exaggerated claims made by Simco in current publications or on the web. Although it is not possible for Gene Simco to control every person who sells products that he licenses rights to, he sticks to the facts in his own marketing, products, and personal website.
