Prevent your dog from eating poop
You know that your dog has unpleasant habits from time to time. However, one of the bad habits that your dog may adopt is eating the feces of other animals. Now that you know that this can lead to numerous health problems, I know that before I managed to stop my dog from eating rabbit feces, he usually got roundworms once or twice every two months. Now, here are the methods I used to finally stop eating stool for the most part. Sometimes it still snags when I’m not looking, but that’s very rare now.
The first thing I had to do was find out where the animals that weren’t mine were going in my garden. Once I figured that out, I knew I had to avoid that area of the yard with my dog. Now that’s just a preventative measure that he can easily overcome by dragging me into that area, but it worked temporarily. If you walk your dog on a leash all the time, this is much easier than letting him run free.
The second thing that I did and that helped the most to break my dog’s habit of eating feces was obedience training. The obedience training class he attended taught him the command to quit. Now that I was the one who enforced the order to quit, he hears me about quitting. Now the best part is that the training also taught him other commands so he would hear me better.
You may be wondering what the leave it command is. That command is the one that when your dog is smelling or chewing something that you don’t want him to smell or bite into, you tell him to stop. Now, if your dog has been trained to give the order to stop, he will stop what he is doing and walk away. This is a really beneficial command for most people who only eat stool, but it works really well to get you to stop it.
These are the two main methods that I have found to work very well to get my dog to stop eating other animal feces. There are other methods available now, but these worked better in my scenario. However, training is probably the best solution to get your dog to stop eating feces, because it will listen to you.
