Space savers for a smaller kitchen

We’ve all been there at some point in our lives – you find yourself living in a place with a kitchen that is less spacious. If you live in an apartment, this is more or less a fact of life, but houses can also suffer from a lack of much-needed space from time to time.

So what do you do when faced with limited kitchen space? You can always deal with that, of course, but life is so much easier when you have a kitchen that works with you instead of against you. The good news here is that there are things you can do to save space in your small kitchen and give yourself the space you need to move around.

You don’t have to go all out and tear down a few walls to make your kitchen more spacious, although that is certainly an option. There are other, simpler ways to do this, and many of them don’t require too much effort on your part to implement. The first thing to do is take stock of your kitchen in its current state to determine where the most problem areas are.

The main complaint from people is the lack of available counter space. If your kitchen has little counter space to begin with, then the addition of small appliances like toasters, blenders, microwaves, and coffeemakers eat up prime real estate that you can’t afford to sacrifice. One solution to remedy that problem is to find a cabinet in which you can store those appliances. Pick one that’s easy to access so it’s not too much of a hassle to get appliances out when you’re ready to use them. An even more convenient solution is to take advantage of the space under the upper cabinets. You can get microwaves, electric can openers, and other appliances that can be mounted under those cabinets, putting them within easy reach, but not taking up space on your counter.

Another way to take advantage of that space under the cabinets is to install some hooks and use them to hang coffee mugs and other items. Those will be close at hand too, but save space inside your cabinets that can be put to other uses, like storing appliances. Cabinet organizers inside your cabinets will give you more compartments and shelf space to organize canned goods, boxed foods, dishes and cutlery. You can find special rotating racks designed to organize and store your plastic food containers, and a rotating spice rack will allow you to keep your spices readily available without taking up a lot of space.

Those are just a few different things you can use to save space in your smaller kitchen, and therefore increase the fluidity of the time you spend there. With a little effort and some creative maneuvering, you can have more room to work with.
