History of messenger bags

A messenger bag is usually made of some type of fabric that is worn over one shoulder with a strap that goes across the chest and rests the bag on the lower back. While sometimes worn by messengers, they have become a true fashion statement in many parts of the world. A smaller size is often called a shoulder bag, and is used while hiking or traveling.

This design of bags has been used in the transport of mail and goods by different types of couriers, postal workers and bicycle couriers. Some UK Royal Mail carriers currently use large messenger bags to deliver mail.

The design of the modern messenger bag traces its origins to the 1950s utility bag made by the De Martini Globe Canvas Company. Founded by Frank De Martini with his two daughters, Kathleen and Marge, linemen were originally allowed to carry any type of tool they needed while climbing poles.

Globe Canvas eventually supplied bags to New York courier companies in the 1970s and 1980s. Larger courier companies required passenger bags and also paid a deposit for them. The bags were often customized for different companies. The two largest companies during those times were: Mobile Messenger and Can-Carriers, which used red and blue bags respectively.

In 1984, John Peters redesigned the De Martini bag using nylon, buckles, and colored stripes. He finished bags with binding on the edges, which set the stage for the craze of messenger bag makers. His designs are now the industry standard for all modern messenger bags. These were the first bags in the industry that used technology to make them.

Similar in function to backpacks, these ensure comfort for people carrying heavy or bulky items, while allowing easy access to the things inside.

They usually incorporate characteristics that make them especially suitable for cycling, trekking or any other adventure activity. The accessories make it easy to move the shoulder strap. In addition, the provision of quick release buckles and a hinged adjustable buckle allow for easy opening of the bag. The ability to attach accessories, such as phone cases, U-locks, or even water bottles, allows for more convenient use of the bag. Stabilizer straps help prevent the bag from sliding while riding.

Messenger bags are a style statement on their own. These bags are usually worn by both genders, but it is often men who find more of a fashion statement than handbags and backpacks.
