Spanish river park
Locals love Spanish River Park for its variety of activities. Whether it’s for a weekend excursion or a lunchtime picnic, the park is a comfortable place to spend a few hours. The area has grills, restrooms and a playground for children.
The water on both sides of the Spanish River Park makes it a unique place to visit. The park is named after the shallow freshwater stream that once flowed on the western edge of the park where the Army Corps of Engineers created a canal, linking the area with the rest of the Intracoastal Waterway. From the western side, visitors can walk through the long tunnel that runs under Route A1A to enjoy the ocean and beach to the east. Visitors come to swim, fish, walk in nature, watch birds, and have a picnic.
Red reef park
Nature enthusiasts will particularly enjoy Red Reef Park, 67 acres of Atlantic coastline and wildlife. The park features an artificial reef so divers can catch a glimpse of the underwater wonders of nature, including tropical fish, turtles, eels, and stingrays. The park’s Gumbo-Limbo Nature Center allows visitors to closely observe wildlife with sea turtles, sharks and stingrays in outdoor aquariums. Shaded walkways are great for afternoon nature walks through butterfly gardens and a 40-foot observation tower. Bird watchers will enjoy the wide range of small birds in the park. Along with the natural surroundings, Red Reef offers picnics with grills, tables, and restrooms.
South Beach
South Beach Park is the third jewel in Boca Raton’s crown. The park offers a variety of native plants and trees common to the dunes. These plants have adapted to the continuous salty breeze that comes from the ocean. They stabilize the dunes and work to preserve the park’s ecosystem. Nature lovers will enjoy exploring the dunes and observing this wonder of nature.
The half-mile beach on South Beach is part of 24 acres in the park, making the area ideal for sunbathing, swimming, or walking along the shoreline. The beach offers three designated swimming areas and is staffed with lifeguards. Unlike the other beaches, South Beach has no picnic facilities, so it’s best for nature walks, swimming, and sunbathing.
