Choose your own domain name

admin 0

Think of a name and check if yourname.com is available. I personally like to use http://www.whois.com to check if a domain name is available. You can also check the registrant’s contact information using the “whois” service if you want to negotiate the purchase of the domain you like from the people who registered it first.

To register the domain name for our clients we use:
http://www.godaddy.com
We are not affiliated with Godaddy in any way, but I think this is the best company online that provides this service. Your fees are low and you’ll have 24-hour access to your control panel to change your domain name information in case your office moves or your phone number changes. This is very convenient.

If you can’t get that exact name like a dot com, choose another name. Your site title MUST be the same as your domain name. People won’t remember your domain name, but they will remember your site title if they choose to bookmark your website. It will also help provide a better place in Google listings. There are several rules to follow when choosing the domain name:

1. It should be as short as possible, but don’t make it something like abc.com just because this domain is available. Be reasonable.

2. Make it memorable. You need to represent your business and it’s not a bad idea to make your business name a domain name.

3. Make it include your keywords, something like allwebdesign.com if your website is about web design. This tip is related to the search engine optimization problem. Most search engines like to get “top” keywords in the domain name, title, and description of the website.

4. The domain name must be a top level domain, not the subdomain of a larger website. For example, it is not a good idea to use [http://mydomain.somebigsite.com] as the name of your website. The top level domain costs around $9 dollars and is not an excuse to have a business website on a free subdomain. Search engines don’t like these domains either and you will automatically be ranked lower than your competitors in search engine listings.

5. It is better to buy a domain name separately from the hosting plan. A domain name is much more important than a hosting provider. As I noted, the average lifespan of a web hosting company is one to two years. If your hosting provider disappears from the web, it can be a hassle to transfer your domain name to your new hosting provider.

It is not difficult at all to buy and register a domain name. You will be given a series of questions related to your location, position, and contact information. All of this information will be used during domain name registration and anyone using the “whois” service will have access to that information, so it would be wise to only enter your business information and not use personal data. When you buy a hosting plan, your hosting provider will send you the letter with the nameserver ips. You will need to send those numbers to your domain name registrant.

You are now ready to select a web host and purchase a hosting plan.
