Clean your cabinets for the best paint finish

Do it yourself cabinet painters, if you’re wondering what the first step is to getting a good paint finish on your kitchen cabinets, then you should consider thoroughly cleaning your cabinets before doing anything else. Cabinets are the least clean surfaces in most kitchens. Most people clean countertops, stoves, sinks, and backsplash, but most of the time they forget about cabinets.

Cabinets collect all kinds of contaminants that you can see. Most people cook, when they season the meat, they forget about a seasoning in the cabinet and with those lucky hands, they brush the cabinets with their bloodstained and contaminated hands, which are wiped with a kitchen cloth if they see the residue. If they don’t see the residue, the contaminated area may not receive a proper cleaning. To clean that type of contaminant, you should clean the area with a good antibacterial cleaner that is also degreaser. The same way you wash your hands after seasoning your meat is the same way you need to clean your cabinets.

Another contaminant that will ruin the paint finish is invisible oil. If you’re like most people, you only clean your cabinets once in a while, be it once a month, every 3 months, or once a year. The cabinets need to be cleaned every day, as do the countertops and the sink. If you don’t clean your cabinets on a daily basis, you will slowly build up a film of oil, grease, and other nasty things that you can’t see that will cause a problem when you decide to refinish or paint your cabinets.

That’s why proper cleaning before moving on to the next prep step is very important to give you the best paint job. You need a few items to clean your cabinets thoroughly. You need gloves, a scotch pad, a sponge, a 3 gallon bucket, and your favorite degreaser.

All of the items listed are common sense, but are checked when a do-it-yourself homeowner decides to paint their own kitchen cabinets. A scotch pad should only be used on your cabinets when you are looking to paint or restore them. Using a scotch pad for everyday wear is not recommended because it will ruin your existing finish over time. If you need to use a scotch pad to remove oil and grease, then you have neglected cleaning it for too long and your next step should be a repaint. Clean your cabinets a couple of times. It is your project, so you must be willing to do the best work for your home.

After washing your cabinets with your best degreaser and whiskey, you should fill your 3 gallon bucket with clean water. Get your sponge very wet, then wring it out and wipe the degreaser off your cabinets. You should keep the water clean and clean the cabinets several times to remove the degreaser. Once you have removed the degreaser, you should repeat the process several times, degrease your cabinets at least 2 times and clean with clean water at least 2 times after degreasing your cabinets, making sure to change the water throughout the process.
