It’s the same time of year that annual summaries make the news headlines. Twitter, Facebook and Google have just published the top 10 trends observed on their site. While going through that, I just thought I’d compile a list of the top 7 trends seen in our own jewelry segment, back in 2010. The trends are as follows:

High demand for sterling silver jewelry As gold prices soared to new heights, sterling silver made a remarkable comeback as one of the most sought-after fashion trends growing stronger with each passing month. More and more jewelers and jewelry manufacturers are experimenting with sterling silver and have confirmed the strong continuation of this trend.

The bolder the better – Mantra It wasn’t just the Bigg Boss that became bolder and more successful, jewelry designers also tried to take advantage of the trend. From big cocktail rings to loads of big bangles, bold jewelry styles have been flaunted in just about every party circle. As more and more people shed their inhibitions and experiment with new looks, bolder designs are here to stay.

Consolidation of Pendant Keychains In early 2009, key pendants came in force and became unpredictably popular with the masses. In 2010, this trend was further consolidated and gained greater appeal. One noteworthy observation was the use of this pendant in more gold than any other traditional metal.

The return of dangling earrings Drop earrings made a huge comeback and were appreciated by both men and women. These types of earrings made a unique style statement and added a glamorous look to a woman’s overall personality. This trend seems to have a longer lifespan and is expected to remain a favorite even in 2011.

Metallic Jewelry – everyone’s delight – During the recession, when the price of other precious metals skyrocketed, punk jewelry got renewed demand. Bronze, copper and brass became the new eye catchers. One more reason for their popularity was their ability to be easily textured, making them a fashionable piece of jewelry to wear. Jewelers took creative liberty and gave their buyers a whole new set of designs to adorn their bodies.

Large Bracers: The Gatecrashers – This was a surprise entry and was seen in most luxury fashion circles. This great accessory worked well with almost any outfit. Any type of hammered metal such as gold or bronze as a bracelet seemed essential for the end of the year.

Accessories inspired by nature: New Kids on the block – When everyone has started singing the Go Green anthem, how can you leave the jewelry industry behind? Accessories such as snake rings and bracelets, leaf designs, green, yellow and brown gemstones and natural stones were seen in many high-profile fashion segments.

In general, 2010 did not give any innovative trends, even then these trends helped the debt-ridden jewelry industry to quickly recover. As they say, “Don’t follow trends, start them!”, we expect 2011 to bring exciting new fashions with a longer lifespan.
